Many works of fiction and historical narrative depict early life in North Dakota.  These provide great background material and make for enjoyable reading.

The following two books are available directly from J. Co. Drug in Crosby, North Dakota.  Call them at  1-800-201-6671 or write to them at 120 North Main Street, Crosby, ND 58730.

Jake's Orphan, written by Crosby resident Peggy Brooke and published by Dorling Kindersley Publishing, Inc.  This is a wonderful "young adult" book depicting North Dakota farm life from the perspective of a twelve year old Minnesota orphan.  The setting is Divide County and the time is 1926.  "Older adults" will enjoy this book as well.

Nothing to Do but Stay, My Pioneer Mother, by Carrie Young is an account of the author's parents who came as children from the same county in Norway, separately proved up homesteads in North Dakota, and eventually met at a threshing rig.
