Redwork Embroidered Quilt

Redwork Embroidered Quilt
66” x 84”

About 1985 my uncle Harry A. Miller gave me these twelve “redwork” squares. He told me that he and his older brother George (my father) made them in the early 1920’s. They were both youngsters under the age of 10 at the time.

Their mother, Minnie Miller, had copied the patterns from a magazine with a pencil (you can still see some of the pencil marks). Then the brothers did the embroidery. I know that the bottom two squares on the right were done by my Dad - his initials are on the back of the block.

I surprised Harry a few years later when I made the squares into a quilt. It made him very happy and it was treasured by him. The picture of Harry with the quilt was taken in 1991.

For the Ambrose Centennial I redid the quilting with more appropriate colors and authentic materials of the period.
