Ambrose Lutheran Ladies Aid

The Ambrose Lutheran Ladies Aid held its first meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ryan. At this meeting they organized and decided to serve lunch and charge ten cents a piece.  In the fall they took in more members making a total of 22. The aim of the Ladies Aid was to work for the building of a new church. At these meetings, the ladies worked on various articles to be later sold.  In December 1907 a basket social was held and $47.25 was taken in. In December 1908 the first supper and sale was held in Miller's Hall when $146.40 was realized.  When the church was built the Ladies Aid turned over a considerable amount of cash.

The Ladies Aid continued to serve suppers and lunches, and, until recent years, have held a fancy work sale in connection with an annual lutefisk supper.  In later years as times became more prosperous both have been discontinued.  However, the ladies still serve food for wedding receptions, local auction sales, and church functions when necessary which supplies the income to carry on their work.

The organization name was first changed to (W. M. F.) Women’s Mission Federation, but since the church merger it has been known as (A. L. C. W.) American Lutheran Church Women.

At present they hold a business meeting and Bible Study once a month in the church building.

Ladies Aid actually began when a group of ladies met in various homes until 1907 when the Ambrose Ladies Aid was formally organized.  Throughout the years the Ladies Aid has contributed to Home and Foreign Missions.  They have especially taken an interest in the maintenance of the church and have donated to interior painting and replacing the aging shingles.

When the Ladies Aid first started they served a supper every month after their meeting for all of their families.  They charged 25 cents a meal.  Later they served lutefisk suppers.  Many quilts were made for Lutheran World Relief and quilts were often given away to local people who needed one.  In 1985, sixty-one quilts were made.  A picture of them appeared in the "Divide County Journal".

Bake sales and rummage sales were often held and quilts raffled off.  The first Quilt Auction was held in 1987 and a meatball supper served.  Other quilt auctions, with Adams and Lindsey Auctioneers, were in 1995, 1997, and 2002.  After these auctions the men served a pancake supper.

The Ladies Aid is still active.  Current 2005 officers are:

President, Kathy Torgeson
Vice President, Arlene Myers
Secretary, Myrtle Hagen
Treasurer, Dora Strand
