FIFTEEN YEARS OF MASONRY
IN AMBROSE LODGE NO. 97
A. F. & A. M.

Ambrose had not existed long as a community before the Masons of the new little city began to find opportunities for fraternal meetings.  In the winter of 1909-1910 their number had grown noticeably by reason of a good many local citizens taking the degrees at Portal, then the nearest lodge.  The law office of Baker & Brace was the meeting place of these brethren and it was there that a decision was reached, on the evening of April 19, 1910, to secure signatures to a petition asking the Grand Lodge of North Dakota for a dispensation to begin work as a lodge.

In due time, the dispensation was granted, bearing the date of August 31, 1910.  Labor began that autumn and continued with such promise that the Grand Lodge saw fit to issue a charter the following summer.  June 28, 1911 is the date of the charter, which was presented in person by Grand Master Robert Morrison at a special meeting on August 22, 1911.

Brother H. O. Van Dervort was named Worshipful Master of the new lodge, holding this office during the time the lodge worked under dispensation and also for the period under charter until the first election and installation of officers.  To the charter membership of twenty there were added seven during this period.  Millers Hall was the meeting place during the early years.

The lodge grew steadily and fully justified the hopes of the founders as well as their judgment in establishing a lodge at this place.  By the end of 1913 there were thirty-nine members.  But 1914 saw a heavy decrease in membership.  Crosby Lodge No. 108 was being organized and its charter membership was drawn largely from the list of those who were demitting from Ambrose Lodge.

Looking ahead rather than backward Ambrose Lodge the following year began the building of the temple that has since been its home.  The loans that were required for this undertaking have long since been paid off and the lodge owns its own home.  The building was dedicated by Grand Master Harry Lord on June 8, 1916.   Grand Secretary W. L. Stockwell delivered the address on this occasion.

On June 22, 1917, Ambrose Chapter No. 84, Order of the Eastern Star, was established, with quarters in the temple.  This is also a strong and growing lodge.

During this, our anniversary year, the membership of Ambrose Lodge has passed the one hundred mark.  But the futility of merely existing and growing has long been recognized.  The spirit of brotherhood has really been promoted.  Masonic charity and Masonic service have been as well exemplified as the degrees of the order.  The social and moral virtues are everywhere encouraged.  Ambrose Lodge occupies a permanent and useful position in the rather large territory embraced within its jurisdiction.  With an active and sincere group of brethren at Fortuna forming a nucleus in the western part of this territory, Masonry has been well served and the influence of Ambrose Lodge greatly extended.  The future is bright.  Our course is Onward.
