Quotes from Ambrose Alumni
While attending high school, my
sister Mabel and I drove back and forth with horse and buggy 4 ˝ miles
except the first year when I stayed in town.
I remember we could walk down town
and get quite a bag of candy for a nickel. We wore what was called
“rats” to puff out over the ears. One day while exercising for
physical education, one girl’s rat fell on the floor.
I get a feeling of nostalgia when I
think of the years I spent in Ambrose with my wonderful parents and all
the other fine folks of the community. I think my sons missed
something by growing up in a city but I am glad they had vacations in
Ambrose.
Ambrose High means memories of the
wonderful R.D. Hand family with whom I made my home during the school
months for three years. Also the Gubrud “dormitory” and
occupants, the operetta “Pocahontas” and the sleigh rides from my Dad’s
farm to Ambrose.
Can remember our girls basketball
team with three pair of sisters: Hoversteens, Gundersons and Schells
and how proud we were of our white middy blouses and red bloomers, no
less.
I loved to play basketball, softball
and even track. Going to Crosby was a big deal as we could have a
shower after the game. We didn’t have one in Ambrose.
I have so many warm and happy
memories of growing up in Ambrose. I only wish every child could
grow up in a small town.
I’ll never forget my years in
Ambrose, especially Olga Henning. She and I used to be real pals.
I was so fascinated by their telephone because we never had one until
we moved to Ambrose. I used to send Olga home and have her call
me on the phone because I couldn’t believe you could hear from an
instrument on the wall.
