Class of 1949 History

It came to pass in the fall of 1945, a long, green streamlined cruiser bearing the Class of 1945 Freshmen came to dock at the Wharf of Ambrose High School.  The passengers were: Adeline Bakke, Gloria Johnson, Donna Gjovig, Betty Mae Erickson, Darlene Ness, Mary Ann Gable, Wade Gulbranson, John Aslakson, Ronald Rude, and Edward Bakke.  They had very little baggage, a few brains, much conceit, and more good humor.

The first social event of our class was initiation, designated by the upper-classmen.  All enjoyed the spread, but hardly as much can be said of the dance, for among the Freshies there were many onlookers, while a few that tried to dance were buffeted about it the will of those older and more experienced in many ways.

After the ups and downs of the Freshman year we were transferred to a larger ship called "The Sophomore".  With this change we lost three passengers: Betty Mae Erickson became Mrs. Arden Hanson, Ronald Rude transferred to Crosby High School, and Edward Bakke dropped out of our organization after about a week.  We also took on a new passenger, Jean Olson from Inglewood, California.

Then came the fall of 1947 and found us on the Junior ship.  We lost two of our members: Donna Gjovig joined the Senior Class and Jean Olson became Mrs. Clayton Gulbranson.

At last we found ourselves sailing in the Senior ship.  We lost one more member, Darlene Ness, who quit at the end of the Junior year to become Mrs. Leonard Kress.  We also gained a new member, George Ebbeson from Berthold, which brings our class membership up to six.  They are as follows: Gloria Johnson, President; John Aslakson, Vice-President; Mary Ann Gable, Secretary and Treasurer; Adeline Bakke; Wade Gulbranson, and George Ebbeson.

Coming out on top is Mary Ann Gable, who received the rank of valedictorian.

Comments from Wade Gulbranson:

Wade went to school in Ambrose from 1945-1949, played basketball all four years, and was team captain his senior year.  He lived in Ambrose from 1962 to 1968 and worked at the train depot (which is now on the Keith Thomte farm).  Wade still considers Ambrose his hometown, even though he owns farmland in Colgan and lives in Portal with his wife Rita.
