Class of 1954 History

History repeats itself, so do not be surprised if our history happens to be like some other great person.

Four years ago on a bright September morning the class of 1954 first assembled. Some of us were so anxious to start their freshman year that they beat the janitor. We entered the building with the proper amount of freshman humility; our hearts quaked with pleasure of speaking to a senior and sent our respect soaring to the loftiest heights. Of course, now the spell has been broken; the trials and tribulations of the different subjects enumerated in the course of study have had their disillusioning effects.

During our freshman and sophomore year we had another member in this class, namely, Merle Parsley, but during the junior year he became to smart for us so we had to push him on with the outgoing class of seniors in 1953.

Our junior year there were only the "unpredictable five" - that is the five boys now. Rita Olson decided to try her luck out West last year because she heard so much of that "Go west young man go west" and she figured there must be more fish in the sea than there were mice in the wheat field.

This year Rita decided she preferred field mice to fish and came back to join our class. Also the juniors decided to get rid of Yvonne and pushed her on to the senior class. So now we make up a class of seven members and we are no longer the "unpredictable five", the two girls make us the "unpredictable seven."

But the lessons we have learned in school and with each other will never be forgotten, and may we all endeavor to follow through life, our motto, "The past forever gone, the future all our own."

Class of 1954 Prophecy

Let us take a glance into the future and see what goes with the class of 1954.

The first thing we see is the obituary column of the New York Daily Herald.  It says Yvonne Cowley died in the year of 1999.  We always knew she would end up there, as she was too anxious to get her name in the newspaper.

Rita Olson didn't become the old maid we expected.    Instead she got married in the year 1973.  She plans to spend the rest of her life washing dishes but we know she will soon change her mind.

Elwood Holte always wanted to be a professional baseball player.  In the year of 1963, we see him telling fortunes on Skid Row besides making a little money on the side by the occupation of a bookie.

Danny Olesen became a kitchen mechanic and we notice that after two years of waiting for Danny to fix their sink faucet, Elaine called a plumber.

In the year 1970, Gene Cowley has settled down to a comfortable life in Lignite with his wife, Donna.  There's only one thing Gene doesn't like about the set-up and that's living with his mother-in-law.

George Bakke always wanted to be governor of North Dakota, but in the year 1980, George decided to do something easier, that of supporting himself and his wife Rita, by farming.

Billy Cowley always thought life would be bliss if the women earned the living while he did the washing and ironing.  But in 1983, he must be contented with supporting his family by being head gardener of the County Infirmary.

Limited time and space prevents me from telling you anymore of the Class of 1954.  So this concludes the Prophecy of the Senior Class of 1954.

Class of 1954 Will

We, the senior class of 1954 in seven (7) distinct parts, being of sound and disposing mind, do ordain and publish this, our last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills, promises or what have you, by us at any other time heretofore made.

We hereby dispose of our estates as follows:

We, the seniors, will to Mr. Stephens the duty of preserving something which cannot exist without his presence, namely, order in the assembly.

We, the seniors, will to Mr. Constans our habit of being between five (5) minutes to one (1) hour late every morning.

As individuals we will as follows:

I, Danny Olesen, will my wisecracks to Dale, so he can get along better with the teachers.

I, Rita Olson, will my height to LaDonna as she might need it in basketball next year, and to Mavis Holte I will my ability to skip school.

I, George Bakke, will my desk to the person who has to sit in it next year, may they have as much luck.

I, Billy Cowley, will my ability to argue to Norman, and my ability to get married while still in school to Lyle Windfaldet.

I, Elwood Holte, will my A's to Honey Olson, and hope she gets as many as I did.

I, Gene Cowley, will my ability to flirt to Lyle Windfaldet as I know he likes pretty girls as well as I do.

I, Yvonne Cowley, will my desk to Norma Bjorntvedt in hopes that she doesn't get stuck on all the gum under the desk, and to Karen Torkelson I will my liking for long earrings which makes all teachers shudder.

In Witness Whereof, We, the Senior Class of 1954, the testator, have set our hand and seal hereto this 14th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-four. (1954)
